A proud Jewish star, he won MVP awards in 1935 and 1940, hit 58 home runs in 1938, and drove in 183 runs in 1937. A four time home run champion, he served four years in World War II. He finished his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1947, then moved into ownership and management roles with the Cleveland Indians.
